Student Intern
FULL-TIME REGULAR
Hourly rate $12.00 an hour

GENERAL PURPOSE:
The student intern program is for high school seniors interested in a career in city government. Students will select one department they are most interested in and will be assigned accordingly. They will gain hands-on experience and develop career skills that will benefit them in their future endeavors. The program will run from September 2025 through June 2026. While school is in session, the department will accommodate the student’s educational and extracurricular schedules. Students may work up to a maximum of 600 hours during the program period.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Depending on the department the student is assigned to job duties may vary. The duties below are just an overview of what each student will be doing on a daily basis.
- Greet visitors and/or City employees; provides assistance in directing individuals appropriately.
- Answers phone, takes messages, and/or gives information to the public.
- Assists with the general office duties, this entails all aspects related to specific office as assigned.
- Assist Department Heads and/or Supervisors in all aspects of the office.
- Assists at counter to meet, greet and assist public in registration of various documents. Obtains copies of documents and collects fees. Inputs information into computer for indexing purposes.
- Writes, types or enters information into computer to prepare correspondence, bills, statements, receipts, checks or other documents, copying information from one record to another.
- Makes copies of and/or scans correspondence or other printed materials.
- Reads and routes incoming mail. Locates and attaches appropriate file to correspondence to be answered by employer.
- Addresses envelopes or packages. Stuff envelopes by hand.
- Prepares outgoing mail and correspondence, including e-mail and faxes; distributes mail and incoming faxes.
- Takes dictation/minutes and transcribes notes on computer, or transcribes from voice recordings. Composes and types routine correspondence.
- Organizes and maintain file system, and files correspondence and other records.
- Orders and maintains supplies, and arranges for equipment maintenance. This includes filing and organizing files.
- Depending on department assigned may complete manual labor such as; pulling weeds, shoveling debris and litter, carries cans and heavy objects and loads trucks; assists in emptying loads at dump sites.
- Each departments job duties may very.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicants must have the following qualifications:
- Must be attending a school within Belen City Limits.
- Must be a High School Senior for school year 2023-2024
- Must have at least a 3.0 GPA
- Must pass pre-employment drug screening.
- References from current teachers preferred.
