Library Tech I - Reference Librarian

FULL-TIME REGULAR

 Deadline for applications is Wednesday May 7, 2025 no later than 5:00PM MTD
Starting annual salary $32,136 ($15.45 an hour) hourly rate depends on water level certifications with increases for higher certifications

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Performs highly responsible, professional library work that includes: 1) Staffing the Reception/Reference Desks at the Belen Public Library for adults, youth and children; 2) Providing informational services using print and electronic sources; and 3) Providing technical support and computer instruction to patrons.  Provides library services to adults, children and teens, including Circulation services, reference, reader’s advisory, and collection development; works with staff to monitor and evaluate services to adults; assists with promotion and publicization of adult services for the community. Works under the supervision of the Library Director and Lead Librarian.  Duties are conducted with independent judgment and initiative and are performed in accordance with the policies of the Belen Public Library and the Laws of the State of New Mexico.
             
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Provides Reference Desk services for adults, youth and children.  Assists individuals and groups in locating and obtaining information and materials from within the library, online, or through interlibrary loan in order to answer reference questions either in person or by telephone, email, or mail. Interviews customers to determine information needs; decides appropriate search strategies; provides answers to routine and complex reference questions in print and electronic formats.
  • Staffs the Reception Desk for the library, and answers telephone calls.
  • Supports the Circulation Services Librarian, maintaining patrons’ confidentiality, library card records and the member database; checking library materials out and in; and assisting with reserves and renewals.
  • Assists library staff as required, including circulation desk duties.
  • Provides assistance to library patrons using public computers, printers and copiers, or with computer questions in-person or by email, in conjunction with the Computer Specialist.
  • Maintains the library’s electronic equipment for patron use.
  • Promotes the library’s electronic resouces to the public.
  • Educates patrons and prepares instructional aids regarding bibliographic instruction, computers and technology, and library materials and services.
  • Provides readers’ advisory services.
  • Collaborates with other library staff to provide high quality programs and services.  Assists with planning and implementing programs and special events
  • Follows the policies and procedures as set forth by the City of Belen.
  • Mindfully chooses resources to enhance the library database and reference collections using professional reviews and following the Library’s Collection Development policy.
  • Maintains and reports high-quality, accurate data about patron reference questions and computer use.
  • Continuously promotes the value of literacy and reading, with an emphasis on reading as a lifelong skill.
  • Develops and expands the skills and interest to work well with diverse populations.
  • Establishes and maintains professional and courteous working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the public.
  • Assists the library director in formulating goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
  • Undertakes special projects at the request of the library director
  • Addresses customer complaints and resolves problems.
  • Must work independently and complete activities according to work schedule(s).
  • Must work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Ensures that each individual patron receives the highest possible standard of quality customer service.
  • Ensures compliance with State of New Mexico Laws and Regulations, and the American Library Association’s Statements.
  • Assists at Belen Harvey House as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and participates in cross-training to perform other library functions.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent research skills and listening skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with persons of all ages and every economic and social level.
  • Able to determine the reference needs of the community and select appropriate resources.
  • In-depth knowledge of reference strategies and information systems.
  • Working knowledge of computing devices including tablets and smartphones, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, databases, general computer software, operating systems, applications and processes, and of the Internet, including effective use of email and search engines, evaluating websites and online safety.
  • Enthusiasm and patience in working with patrons and computer users of all ages and skill levels.
  • Equivalent to the completion of a four-year accredited college degree in education, library science, natural or social science, or other related fields and/or related professional experience.
  • Able to develop proficiency with Library computer platforms and programs.
  • Comfortable with fast-paced multi-tasking.
  • Able to work well with diverse populations.
  • Able to organize and perform work functions independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule with minimal supervision.
  • Spanish Proficiency (preferred).
  • Must successfully pass a drug test and background check.
  • Possesses a valid New Mexico driver’s license.

EQUIPMENT USED:
Knowledge to include use of common office equipment, such as typewriter, computer, calculator, copier, fax, and phone.

The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and move up to 120 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
