Custodian

FULL-TIME REGULAR

Starting annual salary $33,092 ($15.91 an hour)

GENERAL PURPOSE:  Performs a wide variety of general, semi and skilled level duties relating to janitorial, upkeep and repair of City of Belen Recreation Department. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Performs a variety of skilled and non-skilled custodial/maintenance duties to maintain City of Belen Recreation building/property and assigned related City buildings/property.
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment.
  • Follows safety policies and regulations.
  • Take proper pre-cautionary procedures during rain, snow, and other storms.
  • Make necessary recommendations to improve, repair or maintain any City property assigned.
  • Performs custodial work as required and assigned, including: disinfecting surfaces and equipment, change light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; sweep floors; vacuum carpets; mop; shampoo and steam clean carpets; buff non-carpeted areas; dump garbage and reline cans with liners, clean spills, clean drinking fountains mirrors tables wall fixtures, blinds, wash windows, walls, clean rain gutter; sweep roofs.
  • Collecting and taking out trash as needed.
  • Opens and closes, lock, and unlocks facilities as needed.
  • Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various activities and special events.
  • Keeps record of work completed.
  • Cleans, scrubs, waxes and polishes bathrooms and floors when directed.  Dusts, sweeps, and vacuums as necessary.
  • Employee may be required to work irregular hours (including 24 hour call outs), attend job-related meetings, and perform other duties as assigned.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
May perform basic maintenance work on City property as assigned.  The duties listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building.
  • Knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment required to perform duties of the position.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid New Mexico’s driver’s license required.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Knowledge to include use of common hand tools, cleaning equipment and supplies; motor vehicle, mobile radio, phone.  The “dolly” carrier is frequently used to move heavy articles as needed.

The employee must occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.  The employee may on rare occasion subject to fumes and gases from equipment and work performed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, vibration and occasional risk of electrical shock.  The employee may occasionally work in high, precarious places.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and may work with or around chemicals such as detergents, solvents, antiseptics, disinfectants, bactericides, pesticides, paint, lacquer, paint thinner, insulation and roof foam.

The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud, but normally quiet to moderate.
